Easily change the default location of your data in Windows 10

When we install Windows 10 on our PC, many of the functions that this operating system brings are predefined by default. But of course, we must bear in mind that many of these can be modified later.

In this way, what we achieve is to have a much more personalized software in our daily work with the team. Keep in mind that Windows 10 is a system that does not stop growing and increasing in terms of its versatility. But at the same time, the developer, Microsoft, is fully aware that users require more and more control. In this way, what is allowed, as far as possible, is to customize many of the features that are being implemented.

This is something that we have already talked to you on many occasions in the past, since learning all this is something that is good for most. And this not only refers to the user interface using themes, wallpapers or colors, but also very important functions. In fact it is one of them that we will focus on the next lines and that will surely be very useful.

For all these reasons, we are going to show you how to change the storage locations that in principle are predetermined in Windows 10. And it is the case that, depending on the type of use or data, we want to store these in different units Keep in mind that a priori Windows 10 saves all types of data with which we can deal, in the same unit where we install the operating system. Specifically we refer to archives of common use such as our office documents, images, music, videos, etc.

We should not save everything on the same Windows 10 drive

In this way, these files are stored, at least by default, in a single unit of the equipment, which may not always be interesting or effective. To say that the location that Microsoft itself sets by default when we install the system from scratch is the one that many prefer, but it is not the most recommended. We say this because depending on the type of work we carry out, or the files we prioritize, some should be stored in other units. For example, it may be the case that some prefer to store their office or photographic files on another partition or hard disk of those that we have installed on the PC. This is something that can be given for security or space reasons, for example.

That is why, where appropriate, Windows 10 itself allows us to change and customize those disk locations by default, as we will show you below. This for example can be used if we have a SSD disk of little space where Windows 10 is, in addition to another slower HDD disk, but much more capacity. Thus, we may be interested in saving the photos and videos in the second and leaving the first for the system.

Well, all this is something that we are going to achieve through the Windows 10 Configuration application, which we access from the "Win + I" key combination. Therefore, the window corresponding to this integrated functionality appears below.

Manage the data to be saved in Windows 10 from Settings

Once we are located in this application of the operating system, we must click on the "System" option to see all the options available in this section. Thus, among all those found on the left side of the interface, in this case in particular we opt for the so-called "Storage".

Then we will have to place ourselves a little further down in this same window, until we locate the link that says “Change the storage location of the new content”, where we click. It will be then when we can see the section that really interests us in these lines. Then the system will move us to a new screen that shows all the default storage units.

These specifically refer to a total of six different types of data. Among these we find the applications we install, documents, music, photos and videos, movies and series, and finally maps. As you can see first hand, Windows 10 initially establishes for all this, drive C to save these files.

But of course, as we told you before, this is something that we will have the possibility to modify and customize. Therefore, in order to carry out these tasks that we are commenting on, what we do is click on the drop-down list that is located to the right of each type of data. Thus, when clicking on each of the proposals discussed above, the list will show the other options available at this time.

Advantages of saving our data in different locations

How could it be otherwise, here are the disk drives that we have installed on the computer, in addition to the partitions that are available on it at that moment. Therefore, to change we will only have to place ourselves in the corresponding type of file and select the drive or partition on which we want to dump that data.

Of course, we must bear in mind that this will be a permanent change, but that will be effective from that moment, the previous ones will continue in the main unit. Once we have made the changes, they will be saved and applied instantly in Windows 10.

Similarly we must take into account that if we select a removable drive as an external hard drive or USB memory, there will be no problem. But of course, it is clear that this is not the best option unless the unit in question is permanently connected to the computer.
