How to check your microphone in Windows 11 and configure it

If you have an input device such as a microphone connected to your Windows 11 computer and it is not detected or the microphone does not work correctly, in this tutorial we will show you how to perform a verification test to solve the problem

How to test the correct functioning of the microphones in Windows 11

1. The first thing you will have to do is check that the microphone with the problem is actually connected either by cable or wirelessly via Bluetooth. However, you can also check the status of your computer's built-in microphone.

2. The next step will be to click with the right mouse button on the speaker icon located on the right side of the taskbar.

3. In the displayed menu you will have to select the option: Sound configuration

4. Windows settings will open in Sound settings. On that page, scroll down to the section: Entry

5. Here you will have to select any of the connected microphones

6. This takes you to the Properties screen where you have to scroll down until you find the option: Test Microphone.

7. Next to this option you will have to click on the button: Start Test.

8. Immediately after, you should speak into the microphone at a normal volume.

  • If all is well, you will see a blue bar on the "Input Volume" slider that moves from left to right as you speak.
  • If you DO NOT see a blue line moving left and right, Windows may not correctly recognize the microphone or it may not work properly.

9. When you finish the test, you will see the result next to the "Start test" button. The result is reported as a percentage of the total input volume that Windows 11 detected.

Note: the optimal result should be around 75%, on the other hand, if it reaches 100%, the sound will be distorted. If the result is less than 50%, it means that it will be too quiet. If your microphone is too quiet, click the "Input Volume" slider and increase the volume. Similarly, if your microphone is too loud, reduce the volume with the same slider.

10. Then, click "Start Test" again, if necessary, to make sure you have your microphone set to a good input volume.
