How to create a bootable Windows 11 USB stick

Most users will prefer to use the Windows Update tool built into Windows 10, however many others prefer to use an external method such as the Windows 11 ISO image on a bootable USB stick.

Windows 11 is a Microsoft operating system that allows installation from a USB memory. This has many advantages since thanks to a USB memory with the Windows 11 ISO image, it not only allows you to update your old Windows 10 operating system but also allows you to install the Windows 11 operating system from scratch.

Thanks to a bootable USB with Windows 11 we can also repair our computer with that version of Microsoft's operating system. Windows 11 bootable USB sticks will allow you, for example, to replace system files with new ones. This means that, if any of the files on your Windows 11 operating system are corrupt, they will be replaced by completely new and clean ones, so the errors will disappear.

Microsoft allows the creation of Windows 11 bootable USB sticks officially through the Media Creation Tool but also creating a Windows 11 bootable USB stick using third-party tools such as Rufus. However, in order to create bootable USB with a third-party tool, we must first download the Windows 11 ISO image file.

Whatever the reason, in this tutorial we show you in detail how to create a bootable USB memory for Windows 11 from the official tool or from a third-party tool:

How to create a bootable USB stick with Windows 11 (Media Creation Tool)

1. The first thing to do is open the following link on the Microsoft website in your browser: Download Media Creation Tool

2. Once here you will have to scroll down until you find Create Windows 11 installation media and click on the button: Download now.

3. This will automatically download the Media Creation Tool executable.

4. When the download has finished, you will have to double left click on the .exe file

5. This will show the window of the tool in which you will first have to accept the agreement and its conditions.

6. You will be sent to a new screen where you have to check the option: Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC.

7. Click Next and in the new screen you will be able to configure the language, architecture and edition of the Windows 11 operating system that the bootable USB memory will have. However, if this bootable USB memory is going to be used on that same PC, we recommend that you check the option box: Use the recommended options for this computer.

8. After clicking Next, you must check the option: USB flash drive.

Important Note: At this point you must connect a USB memory to your PC or laptop. This USB memory must have at least a storage capacity of 8GB and not contain any important files since all of them will be deleted.

9. Now you will see a new screen that shows the list of external storage memories connected to your computer in which you will have to select the USB memory just connected and that we want to use as a bootable USB.

10. Once again, once the USB is selected, you will have to click on the Next button and the process of checking, downloading and creating your bootable USB memory will begin automatically.

11. Once the percentage of the process reaches 100% your bootable USB memory with Windows 11 will be ready to be used.

How to create a bootable pendrive with the Windows 11 ISO (third-party tool)

1. The first thing you should know before starting the tutorial is that, for this method, you must have an ISO image of the Windows 11 operating system. Here's how to get it: How to download the official Windows 11 ISO image file

2. Connect the USB memory that you are going to use to boot, which must be 8Gb or higher. It should also not contain important files as all files will be deleted.

3. In this tutorial we will use the Rufus tool which is free and you can download from the following link: Download Rufus

4. Once downloaded, double click on the installable file, which will cause the program to install on your computer.

5. When installed open the program which will show the interface

6. In the program interface, you will have to configure it in the following way:

  • Device: Select the correct USB memory, if it is not activated automatically.
  • Boot choice: Use the Select button to "select" the Windows 11 ISO image file.
  • Image Options: Standard Windows Installation
  • Target System: Here you will have to choose UFEI (not CSM) this is usually the case for Windows 11 since UFEI instead of BIOS is a mandatory requirement. However, if it doesn't work for you, try selecting the option: BIOS
  • Partition scheme: Here you will have to mark GPT which is the one corresponding to UEFI. However, if it doesn't work, you will have to try the option: MBR
  • File system: you have to mark NTFS

7. After configuring everything as described, you must click the Start button.

8. The process of creating the bootable USB stick with Windows 11 will start automatically and when it is finished you will be notified.

9. Once you have finished the bootable pendrive it will be ready to be used.
