How to download files locked by Microsoft Edge in Windows 10

Like other web browsers, the purpose of Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 is to allow users to browse the web and download files from the Internet.

However, sometimes when trying to download a file from the web, Edge may block the download by displaying the message "(file name) is not safe to download and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter." If you click the View Download buttons next to the warning message, the Downloads panel opens. Here, Edge displays the message "This unsafe download was blocked by the SmartScreen filter."

Microsoft Edge has a built-in feature called SmartScreen Filter designed to keep you safe online. The SmartScreen Filter feature automatically detects and blocks websites and file downloads that are known to be malicious, according to Microsoft. The Edge browser automatically sends some data to Microsoft's servers and checks the URL and file name against a list of URLs and downloads that have been reported as malicious or suspicious.

When Microsoft Edge shows that "(file name) is not safe to download and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter message" while trying to download a file or program from an unknown website, it is a good idea to download the file or program from others websites.

If you are getting the same message for a specific file even while downloading it from another website, it is a good idea to check the URL and the program using the popular VirusTotal service.

That being said, sometimes, you might get the warning message when downloading well-known software from a reputable website. For example, a few hours ago, I received the above warning message while trying to download the popular EasyBCD software from Softpedia.

If Edge is blocking a file download and you are sure the file and URL are safe, follow the instructions below to download the file blocked by Edge.

Step 1: When you get "(file name) is not safe to download and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter warning message", click the View Downloads button to view the Downloads panel.

Step 2: You should now see the file locked by Edge. Right-click the locked file, and then click the Download unsafe file option to download the file to your PC. As simple as that!
