How to download unused apps in iOS 11

The latest iPhone is available in 64GB and 256GB configurations. Both configurations meet the lower and upper end storage needs of the average user.

Unfortunately, these two settings weren't always what Apple offered. When the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were released, they were available in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB. Apple dropped the 32GB model and 16GB was ridiculously low. Users with 16GB had to carefully choose which apps to install, how many photos to take, and which messages to keep on their device. Now there is a better way to manage little space on iOS; download unused applications.

Downloading unused apps is a new feature in iOS 11 that will remove unused apps to free up space. iOS still keeps the data for these apps, so if you decide to install them again later, everything will still be there. IOS apps can be quite large, and the data they save is not that large in comparison. Downloading unused apps takes advantage of this.

Enable unused app download

Open the Settings app and go to General> iTunes and App Store. Scroll to the bottom and activate the option 'Download unused applications'. iOS will not delete, that is, it will download the applications immediately. As long as you have ample storage space on your device, no apps will be removed. Apps will only be removed when storage is low.

For example, if you are installing a large application and your device does not have enough space, unused applications will be removed. Likewise, if you are recording video and running out of space, the unused apps will be downloaded.

Manually download a single app

You can also manually download a single application. To do so, open the Settings app and go to General> iPhone Storage. Wait for the app list to load. This may take a little time depending on the number of applications you have on your device. Generally, iOS takes a bit of time to estimate storage usage anyway. Below each app, you will see when you last used it.

Touch an application and on the application screen, touch the 'Download application' option. Confirm that you want to download the application from the menu

You will still see the app icon on your home screen for a downloaded app, however it will have a little cloud icon next to it. To install the app again, just tap on it.

Warnings

iOS can only install a downloaded app if it is still available on the App Store. If an app has been checked out from the App Store and downloaded, you won't be able to retrieve it. You can't even back it up to iTunes anymore. Starting with iTunes 12.7, you cannot download and install applications from your desktop.
