The default mail app on the Mac received a much-needed makeover with the macOS Big Sur Update. Along with aesthetics, the Mail app has a few drawbacks. One such annoyance is that the Mail app unexpectedly quits in the middle of work.
Even if you use the Mail app occasionally, random crashes need to be fixed. If you have the same problem on Mac, read on to fix it.
Restart your Mac
This is one of the most common solutions for the Mail application. Restarting your Mac would give you a chance for macOS to load all of your resources correctly, which may not have fully loaded the first time you start your Mac.
Step 1: Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner.
Step 2: Select Restart.
That should restart your Mac and you should check if the problem continues.
Update macOS
Like on iOS, the Mail app on macOS is linked to the system. That is, Apple sends the updates to the Mail application through system software updates. You cannot go to the Mac App Store and download the mail update on the Mac.
Step 1: Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner.
Step 2: Go to System Preferences.
Step 3: Select Software Update.
Step 4: Update macOS to the latest version available.
Restart the Mac and try using the Mail app again.
Rebuild mailboxes
If you can access the Mail app for a couple of minutes, try this trick to fix the problem.
Step 1: Open the Mail app on the Mac.
Step 2: Select Mailbox from the menu bar.
Step 3: Click Rebuild at the bottom.
MacOS will rebuild all email accounts. Once done, restart your Mac and open the Mail app to see if it randomly crashes.
Disable / enable email accounts
This is a useful hack that has worked for many. If there are some problems with the email accounts added in the Mail app, it may be closed unexpectedly. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.
Step 1: Go to the System Preferences menu on Mac.
Step 2: Select the Internet Accounts section.
Step 3: Select the email account from the left sidebar.
Step 4: Unmark it on the right side.
Now go ahead and open Mail and check if it works fine. If everything seems to be in place, go back to the same Internet Accounts menu and enable the option to use the email account with the Mail app.
Boot into safe mode
When you start the Mac in safe mode, it will automatically fix Mac problems and clear the system cache causing problems. Follow the steps below to start your Mac in safe mode.
Step 1: Shut down your Mac completely.
Step 2: Hold down the Shift key on the Mac keyboard and press the Power button.
Hold down the Shift key until your Mac boots into safe mode.
Now you can open the Mail app and see if the problem is resolved or not. If it doesn't restart in normal mode, continue with the other solutions.
Delete preference files
The preference files on your Mac are responsible for telling the applications on your computer how they should work. Preference files in Mail app can get corrupted during use and that can cause Mail app to crash on Mac.
You need to move those troublesome preference files to Trash. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open the Finder menu.
Step 2: Select Go from the menu bar.
Step 3: Click Go to Finder in the next menu.
Step 4: Type ~ / Library / Preferences and hit the Go button.
Step 5: Identify com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.mail-shared.plist from the list. Right click on them and select Move to Trash.
After that, restart your Mac and see if the problem with the Mail app is resolved.
Delete the saved mail folder.
The saved mail folder is a cache folder that allows the mail application to be reopened or resumed after the user closes the application.
If you notice that the mail app crashes after using it for the first time, it is possible that the saved folder is corrupted and is causing the mail app to crash.
Step 1: Open the Finder menu.
Step 2: Select Go from the menu bar.
Step 3: Click Go to Finder in the next menu.
Step 4: Type ~ / Library / Saved App Status / and hit the Go button.
Step 5: Find the folder named com.apple.mail.savedState and move it to the trash.
Reset NVRAM
Resetting NVRAM is an effective way to troubleshoot Mac problems. This small storage saves your computer's settings while the power is off.
To reset NVRAM, restart your Mac. When you hear the Mac startup sound, press and hold Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds. The Mac will restart once or twice. The action will reset both NVRAM and PRAM.
