Facebook and WhatsApp can become drugs according to science

Do you think you can not spend more than a week without using Facebook and WhatsApp? If so, you may have a serious problem, since a new study, social networks could cause addiction and be something like a drug for certain profiles.

It is relatively normal to take a look every day to your Facebook wall, to your Twitter account or to the photos that your friends and contacts have posted on Instagram. In addition, instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram have become a regular and constant form of communication used daily.

Until then, everything is fine. But, what happens when a person is not able to spend a week without using or watching Facebook and WhatsApp or any other social network or mobile app? This is the question researchers from the University of Vienna and the Karl Landsteiner University have been asking.

The results, although they could be more or less expected, are not at all flattering, since they report people suffering if they can not access their social networks almost as much as if they had withdrawal symptoms.

The study that shows the dangers of overuse of Facebook and WhatsApp as well as other social networks and apps

The research team focused its study on 152 volunteers whose ages were between 18 and 80 years. All of them spent a week without being able to use any social network or messaging app, only the email and the classic mobile SMS.

During this time of study, specialists began to observe certain withdrawal symptoms in some participants who, unable to access their networks, showed symptoms of boredom and temptation for the 'forbidden'.

But the problem did not end there. In addition, the participants suffered social pressure, as other members of social networks asked them with some insistence to return to use the apps and other tools.

The volunteers' associates considered that these users lost important news and information by not connecting to networks or communicating via apps.

Moreover, some of the participants were not even able to endure for a full week without the use of networks and messaging apps.

According to the data, even lifted the prohibition of use of networks and apps, the feeling of desire continued in some participants. In addition, only 30% of about 1000 people consulted were interested in leaving social networks and considered themselves prepared for such a challenge. So, those who did not consider it, probably would have suffered much more than the volunteers.
