It is easier to suffer a cyber attack than an allergy

Suffering a cyber attack is more common than we think. At least 33% of Spaniards have been victims of cybercrime, a fact that places us as the third country that suffers the most attacks after the United States and the United Kingdom

The figures are revealing, but they are even more alarming if we compare them with the risk of suffering an allergy, 25% of Spaniards, according to the Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC). Thus, we are more likely to suffer a cyber attack than an allergy.

With this context, Black Friday is celebrated, a day when online sales are booming all over the world, but also this type of attacks. According to a study conducted by RiskIQ, more than 5% of the 4,331 mobile apps we find when searching for "Black Friday" in the global app store are marked as malicious. In this situation, IMF Business School has detected seven computer errors that facilitate the hacking of our equipment and that could contribute to our having a "black Friday":

Run away from the updates. We know that the rush and memory problems in the device are responsible for postponing the updates of the operating system, software of the apps or the antivirus of our team. However, constant updating is a good barrier to stop hackers, so we must ensure that all our data is safe and secure.

Unofficial downloads or installations. By downloading applications or programs from pages of doubtful credibility, we increase the risk of suffering a cyberattack.

Use of public Wi-Fi networks. If we can easily access it, why will not hackers do it too? If we connect to them, from IMF Business School they recommend us to read carefully the conditions of use, in addition to not carrying out delicate operations such as consulting our bank account or contracting new services.

Click on any link or advertisement. We must check its origin always. During these days we see hundreds of ads with little credible offers and, although these days the ecommerces go crazy to lower prices, we should not just click, but go directly to the official page to check that the price is real.

A password for everything. Every time we use more passwords and remember all of them can be chaos. However, having only one makes us more vulnerable to possible cyberattacks. How to generate strong passwords? Take note of these three requirements: that it is difficult to guess, that it has all kinds of characters and that we can relate it to something easy to remember. In addition, from the school they emphasize the importance not only of being unique, but also of changing them frequently.

Subtract importance to backup copies. Procrastinating is not allowed in this case. It is an easy task to perform and that guarantees us the preservation of all the files.

Pay with a card in unknown websites. Unknown or not, it is best to use secure online payments. A good example of this is PayPal, where we will pay online with your email account while our bank details will be fully protected. In addition, they notify us by email every time a payment occurs informing us of the transaction.

Do not use two-step authentication. Many of the online platforms already include the authentication option in two steps, that is, in addition to the password, a random numerical code is generated that we receive by SMS and that functions as a double control.
