KDE Plasma in the Avatar 2 production

The Linux desktop has much more acceptance in segments where you do not expect to find it from what seems a priori.

This is the case of the film industry, in which the open source software, but especially the Linux desktop, have a long and reliable trajectory. And although we talk about the desktop in general, in particular the KDE software has traditionally been the most visible.

The last example comes via Twitter and deals with the production of Avatar 2, the sequel to the biggest blockbuster in history to date, whose return to theaters around the world is scheduled for December of 2020. In the tweet KDE Community boasts of "having helped Mars get to NASA, and of being helping James Cameron now to reach Pandora", the fictitious planet in which the adventure takes place.

This no surprise to see KDE Plasma in those places, but it is a joy to be reminded from time to time how far they have come. Almost nine years ago we told you how Ubuntu was used in the Avatar production, and although KDE was not mentioned then and now the system is not mentioned, it does not matter. As far as KDE is concerned, we've seen it in other major productions such as Gravity, The Hobbit, Interstellar ...

It is also worth mentioning the launch last year of the Academy Software Foundation, the union of The Linux Foundation and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States to "provide a neutral forum for developers of open source software in the film industry. and related media industries in order to share resources and collaborate on technologies for the creation of images, visual effects, animation and sound ", so that the juncture between open technologies and Hollywood remains in good health.
