Microsoft reveals new Russian cyber attacks to political organizations of the EU

At least they will try, and that is that Microsoft has relieved cyber attacks continued against political institutions in Europe. Not only have been against campaign organizations, but also against non-profit organizations whose scope of action includes democratic issues, public policies and electoral integrity. Microsoft gives examples of attacks to the German Council of Foreign Affairs, non-governmental, the Aspen Institute and the Marshall Fund of Germany.

Such attacks, according to the Redmond company, which offers information given its work in the Intelligence Threat Center and the Digital Crimes Unit (MSTIC), have targeted 104 email accounts of employees of organizations in Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Romania and Serbia.

Strontium, APT28 and Fancy Bear: three names for the hacker group that Microsoft suspects

Microsoft is still investigating the case, but they are suspicious of a Russian hacker group that the company calls internally Strontium, but is also known as APT28 and Fancy Bear. In addition to this case and many others, is one of the two hacker groups known to star in the attack on the servers of the 2016 Democratic National Committee, which created a very nagative climate between the followers of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, the candidate who lost the primary.

The detected attacks used phishing techniques sending links to websites that seemed true through the campaign emails, to obtain access credentials and to infect the managers with malware. Starting today, Microsoft will offer its AccountGuard service in Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Slovakia, which join the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

It is part of its Defense for Democracy Program, and is offered free of charge to all organizations involved in democratic processes that already use Office 365. Those who use it will receive notifications of cyber attacks, in personal and organizational emails.
