US launches accusations against China for hacking industrial secrets

The US Department of Justice announced Thursday accusations against China for hacking industrial secrets, the first of which is expected to be a series of measures to pressure China for the theft of confidential information from companies and the Government.

This matter, the theft of intellectual property, is one of the main workhorses between China and the Western countries, and the Donald Trump Administration had promised to put a stop to these practices.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - the highest office in Justice since the resignation of former District Attorney Jeff Sessions - and FBI Director Chris Wray announced that the US had identified two Chinese hackers, members of the government group known as APT10, against the that would launch international denunciations. "Hackers know: we know how to identify you, you will not remain anonymous, we will not let your acts go unpunished," Wray warned.

"The depth of the robberies is surprising and outrageous," continued the head of the research agency. The hacks would have occurred "with the collaboration of the Chinese Ministry for State Security, public companies and even supposedly private companies." Its consequence, he added, is that "American companies invested millions of dollars and hours in developing technologies that these Chinese companies obtained for free," which he considers "a flagrant injustice."

Shortly thereafter, the Foreign Ministry of the United Kingdom confirmed in a statement that the British National Cyber Security Center has been detecting the theft of APT 10 since 2016, against "sensitive commercial and intellectual property information" and to "perpetrate commercial espionage". In addition, they consider proven that they act "according to the requirements of the Chinese State and the Ministry of Security".

This morning, the Washington Post announced that the US government and "a dozen allied countries" would send simultaneous messages of condemnation against China for the theft of intellectual property. This issue is one of the main reasons behind the trade war between the US and China, and this step to insist on this can mean a new open front in the trade negotiations between the two countries.
