Windows 10 will reserve 7 GB of disk to manage updates

Every time we make the mistake of believing that there is nothing left to say about the system of updates in Windows 10, Microsoft comes out to the crossroads and leaves us a gift on the table

The horror of the 1809 build forced the giant of Redmond to think more deeply about his strategy of updates, and the conclusion is that from the 1903 version, the operating system will take on average an additional 7 GB of disk to guarantee the stability of the process of update and the general operation of Windows 10 in front of a hypothetical lack of space.

The latest records indicate that only 6.6 percent of the Windows 10 ecosystem is in the 1809 version of "October." The failure of this update has been so great that it left in doubt the entire mechanism of updates for Windows 10. Does Redmond see the reports of the Insider program shared by users? Are two major updates needed per year? Are the people assigned to correcting bugs enough? Reasonable doubts that Microsoft must resolve sooner or later, but if we are guided by its latest developments, they seem to have started at the other end. A classic Windows problem is that it starts to malfunction when there is not enough disk space. The same effect extends to many applications, and of course, to Windows Update itself. The official response? Reserve space like never before.

As of the next major update, Windows 10 will have a new function to reserve disk space, thus creating a special zone assigned to caches, temporary files, applications and hotfixes. A Microsoft representative indicated that the reservation of space will be enabled automatically on all computers that come on the market with Windows 10 1903, or in clean installations of the same build. In the specific case of updates, the idea is to try to use that reserved storage first, and the operating system will be responsible for emptying or expanding the reservation as necessary.

Those members of the Insider program are already in a position to evaluate the space reservation if they are in build 18298 or higher. The official text confirms that reserved storage can not be deleted. The initial average is about 7 gigabytes, but the user has the ability to influence (to some extent) the final number by disabling optional functions or uninstalling secondary languages. Once again, the company's intentions seem to be good, and from a practical point of view the storage reservation is likely to be effective, but the underlying problem does not change: The user is obliged to compensate for Microsoft's structural deficiencies with hardware resources.
